For many years the term locum tenens or place-holder referred mainly to a doctor that had been working in place of a permanent doctor while on vacation. This locum tenens would watch over the patience making sure all proper documentation was done, the patients were well taken care of and that any issues that were needed to be taken care of, were.
Recently locum tenens has been extended to other parts of the medical field and not just specifically to the lead doctor or for that matter any key position holder in a doctors office. A locum tenens can now take on the role of a nurse practitioner, a registered nurse, a doctor that may practice in a different field for example pathology jobs.
